REACTIVE AIRWAY DYSFUNCTION SYNDROME (RADS)

Reactive Airway Dysfunction Syndrome (RADS) is a condition of the lungs and airways which is characterized by a high sensitivity to environmental irritants. It is sometimes called “occupational asthma”. It is caused by inhaling respiratory irritants. These irritants can include painting chemicals, heavy metal salts, cleaning chemicals, smoke, and other, normally benign inhalants. The exposure to the irritant must be significant.

The most notable symptom is wheezing and shortness of breath. Symptoms increase with exposure to any respiratory irritant. Symptoms are relieved by use of an asthma medication. There are specific medical tests which can further diagnose RADS that a doctor will prescribe.

Usually, the exposure will be work related. This means compensation to the injured worker in the form of Workers Compensation. Sometimes, the claim is for negligence of someone other than an employer. That would be a personal injury claim.
